Govt firm on bauxite mining in Agency

In what could be seen as a fresh attempt to push through the bauxite mining project in Vizag Agency despite strong opposition from local tribals, rights groups and Maoists, the government is planning to conduct a public hearing by December this year.

Sources said the government is firm on mining the abundant bauxite reserves much against the wishes of the locals. The public hearing is being rushed so that mining activity could begin in early 2012. This contradicts the claims of Union minister for tribal welfare Kishore Chandra Deo, representing Araku LS in the Agency, who assured the tribals of scrapping the proposed project. "After becoming Union minister, Kishore promised that he would see to it that bauxite mining is stopped. But a central team was sent secretly to conduct a survey here," a Human Rights Forum leader said.
