EGA accelerates sustainable mobility: solar aluminium powers Brembo's next-gen braking systems

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the UAE's heavyweight industrial player and the biggest 'premium aluminium' producer in the world, has strengthened its commitment to produce innovative and sustainable automotive solutions following an expanded supply agreement for its CelestiAL solar aluminium to Brembo – the Italian global leader in high-performance braking systems.

A green metal for the fast lane

CelestiAL is EGA’s first aluminium brand made with solar power captured in the UAE desert, a renewable energy source that significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the metal during smelting. Aluminium smelting is known to have accounted for as much as 60 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions by global industries.

The agreement between EGA and Brembo builds on a partnership dating back to 2019. The current development marks a pivotal moment as Brembo intensifies its push towards carbon neutrality. According to Beatrice Sarti, Chief Purchasing Officer of Brembo, the company “takes another significant step forward in responsible procurement. This new agreement allows us to reduce emissions by nearly 50 per cent for the same volume of aluminium, further reinforcing our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.”

Aluminium’s key role in automotive innovation

In addition to its aesthetic shine, aluminium's low weight and high strength & corrosion resistance make it an incredibly valuable material for modern mobility. Whether it's an ultra-high speed racetrack car or today's newest electric vehicle, weight reduction, safety and performance is a constant engineering challenge. Brembo's brakes, which are used by leading car companies like Ferrari and Porsche, rely on advanced aluminium alloy technologies.

EGA is already the largest supplier of foundry alloys to the automotive industry worldwide, with relationships with major customers like the BMW Group and tier-one suppliers to Mercedes-Benz and Nissan. With CelestiAL, Brembo clearly intends to be a leader in both technological and environmental innovation.

Solar aluminium: driving the UAE’s industrial vision

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, highlighted the broader significance of this agreement: “At EGA, we continue to drive innovation to produce the highest quality, low-carbon metal for our customers. I look forward to continuing our successful partnership with Brembo over the coming years, and I thank them for their trust in EGA.”

For EGA, this partnership not only enhances EGA's presence in the automotive supply chain throughout Europe, but it also contributes to the UAE's ambitions to diversify its economy and be a leader in the green industry.

The global automotive industry finds itself at a crossroads in electrification and decarbonisation, and products such as those at CelestiAL provide a vital pathway to a cleaner future. As sustainability transitions from a consideration to an imperative, partnerships such as EGA and Brembo’s establish a threshold for industrial symbiosis that is mutually beneficial for both business and the environment.
