Dutch National Recycling Scheme reports robust recycling and recovery rate

The recently released 2014 Sustainability Report by Netherlands-based ARN indicates that the company achieved 96% recycling and recovery rate during the year. This comprises of 86.1% recycling and 9.9% energy recovery. It must be noted that the European region has set a target which requires 95% of the weight of a car must be recycled and usefully recycled.

According to the company, it operates a post-shredder treatment (PST) facility in Tiel, which recycles around 40,000 metric tons of shredder residue every single year. The company expects the PST plant to go fully functional in 2015, with more processing capabilities. The National Recycling Scheme treats auto shredder residue from shredder companies across the Netherlands. ARN termed its performance as “excellent”, but stated that there is much more scope for improvement.

ARN Managing Director Arie de Jong stated that it intends to make the reporting system futureproof by carrying out three shredder trials. For each trial, 400 end-of-life vehicles will be collected, as a representative sample of the vehicles currently on the Dutch roads. It will not only help ARN comply with the European monitoring rules, but also aid to meet Dutch government requirements. The results of the trials will provide a clearer picture of the chain’s performance, it noted. This data will also be included in the calculation of 2015 recycling performance data.
