EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 2MINS READ

USA is the world’s largest aluminium scrap exporter. Being a country with one of the highest GDPs, the country consumes significant amount of aluminium can and other aluminium foil packaging that generates large amount of scrap along with e-scraps.  The category ranked No. 154 through December 2016 among the roughly 1,265 export commodity groupings in U.S. as classified by Census.

According to the recent estimate, in 2015, the U.S. exported 1.3 million tons of aluminium scrap globally. The total value of the revenue amounts to about US$ 2.3 billion. Compared to 2015, in 2016, the U.S. is estimated to export an estimated 1.38 million tons of aluminium scrap globally. The total revenue from the export amounts to US$ 2.5 billion for the estimated amount.

However, according to WorldCity analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data U.S. exports of aluminium waste and scrap decreased 23% from $2.35 billion to $1.81 billion in 2016 when compared to the same period the previous year.  The data from US Census claims the export of scrap has dropped in 2016. This is because, after the fall out of primary aluminium industry the U.S. is concentrating more on scrap generation and recovery to produce secondary aluminium.

Considering the trend in last two years the aluminium scrap export by the U.S. is estimated to reach 1.2 million tons in the first 11 months of 2017 and the revenue from export is estimated to be about USD 2.5 billion.

Comparing the estimate and the actual data, it is expected that aluminium scrap export by the U.S. would be about 1.5 million tons in 2017 with a revenue realization of USD 2.5 billion.

As supported by the latest data from U.S. Census Bureau, the top five destinations of U.S. aluminium scrap exports are China, Canada, South Korea, Mexico and India.
