China’s Bauxite imports tumble in Nov on imminent Indonesia’s export ban

China’s bauxite imports tumbled in November as Indonesia’s export ban loomed large, Shanghai Metals Market has learned.
Inbound shipments were 5.37 million tonnes last month, surging 48.7% year-on-year, but down 23.0% month-on-month. Imports throughout the first eleven months totaled 65.53 million tonnes, spiking 81.7% YoY.
The overall decline was, in large part, due to falling imports from Indonesia as the global top supplier would prohibit exports of unprocessed ores, including bauxite, on 12 January, 2014. Imports of Indonesian bauxite plunged 1.87 million tonnes or 34.9% MoM to 3.49 million tonnes in November.
SMM expected China’s imports of Indonesian bauxite to drop further in December because of the imminent export ban.
While inbound shipments of Indonesian bauxite fell, imports of Australian bauxite rose considerably. China imported 1.5 million tonnes from Australia last month, soaring 89.3% from a year ago and 66.1% from the previous month.
China also ramped up imports from other countries. For example, imports from Brazil, India, Fiji and Ghana hit 380,000 tonnes in November.
