Chhattisgarh government launches online mining auction platform to drive in industrial expansion

EDITED BY : 4MINS READ

In a significant step for Chhattisgarh's mining industry, Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai has reportedly launched the e-auction process for new blocks of bauxite, iron ore, and limestone minerals. A pre-bid conference was arranged at Nava Raipur Atal Nagar, aimed at attracting investors to encourage them to invest in local development and make the state's abundant mineral riches accessible for industrial investment.

The meeting served as an opportunity for potential investors and other industrial stakeholders to demonstrate their interest in accessing the various mineral resources of Chhattisgarh. The Mission of the pre-bid was to highlight the economic potential of new mineral blocks as well as build interest in subscribing to a fair and transparent auction process.

Digital-first approach to transform mining

The state's ambitious plan to digitise mineral block auctions highlights the growing focus on "ease of doing business" and accountability. Chhattisgarh's adoption of an online auction platform modernises its mineral sector and sets the path for other mineral-rich states. According to Principal Secretary and Mineral Secretary P Dayanand, “Our mission is aligned with the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat, Viksit Chhattisgarh.’ The state offers immense opportunities for industries relying on mineral resources.”

The undertaking highlights Chhattisgarh's geological advantage: it is one of the few Indian states endowed with over 28 major minerals, including lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements. A dedicated Drill Core Library will also be established in Sonakhan Bhavan, aiming to enhance exploration capabilities. This will limit uncertainty for investors.

Dayanand pointed out that the state wants to speed up the successful sale of the 51 mineral blocks that have already been sold. To find high-potential mineral zones, a special task force is spearheading research and exploring activities.

Industrial impact: jobs and revenue

The state government anticipates that these auctions will raise INR 1,600 crore (USD 187,336) in revenue and generate approximately 3,000 jobs, particularly in the mining and cement sectors. The limestone blocks, situated in Balodabazar (the "Cement Capital of Chhattisgarh"), offer over 200 million tonnes of limestone and high calcium oxide content ideal for cement.

Director of Mines Rajat Bansal emphasised the operational advantages, noting, “Each site has the potential to host industrial units with 3 to 4 million tonnes of annual production capacity, generating significant employment at the local level.” The well-developed road and rail infrastructure further ensures smooth logistics and supply chain efficiency.

Strategic vision for a resilient state economy

Beyond revenue, the e-auction strategy aims to build a resilient and diversified industrial base. The state is inviting investors to set up value-added downstream units, fostering an integrated industrial ecosystem. "This is not just about auctions," Dayanand added. "It’s about building a future-ready Chhattisgarh, driven by industry, innovation, and inclusive growth."

“These blocks represent lucrative industrial opportunities,” said Dayanand. “I invite investors to see Chhattisgarh as a prime destination for mineral‑based industries and take full advantage of our pro‑industry policies and investor‑friendly environment.” He promised complete government assistance in the form of open processes, prompt approvals, and strong infrastructure to enable a smooth industrial setup.

Through transparent governance and solid infrastructure, the state of Chhattisgarh aspires to convert its mineral wealth into sustainable, long-term social and economic development. The state aims to create higher-quality jobs for its people, foster local community development, and introduce advanced technologies to support its manufacturing sector. This commitment signals a transition toward a more sustainable, inclusive growth model and a potential new timeline for the future.

A model for future mining policy

Chhattisgarh’s approach may inspire other mineral-rich regions striving to facilitate growth while promoting transparency and sustainability. The state has strong policy support, proven reserves and a commitment to using advanced digital technology, which sets you up to become a leader in mineral-based industrial development.
