Bauxite potential

The bauxite mine, said to be Fiji's first, was opened by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama at Nawailevu in Bua yesterday and is poised to rake in further investments into the country.
Australian Bauxite Limited chief executive Ian Levy said the Nawailevu bauxite mine was only a demonstration of Fiji's potential in the supply of this resource.
"The investment is a lot more than $35 million if the Chinese company makes this first mine successful," Mr Levy told The Fiji Times.
"This site is just an experiment, a demonstration and there are about seven more sites identified for bauxite mining from Wainunu through to Labasa," he said.
"If all goes well, bauxite mining could last for several years creating employment for hundreds of locals," he added.
Mr Levy said bauxite mining was a big venture for a country like Fiji.
"It involves huge tonnage and the best way to gain the most out of it is by running it cheaply," he said.
