Bauxite mining starts
WORK at the bauxite mine site at Nawailevu in Bua has started.

A team from the Commissioner Northern's office visited the site on Tuesday to inspect the progress of the mining work.

Divisional planning officer northern Alipate Bolalevu said construction work was progressing well.

"The mining started on Tuesday this week and about 80 villagers from Bua have been recruited," he said. "Apart from the professional workers, the company has recruited about 80 villagers who are designated as security guards and drivers."

Mr Bolalevu said that even though the first shipment has yet to be exported, "we are glad the company has taken the first step to begin with the mining works".

"So far, about 15 trucks have already off-loaded the bauxite near the jetty," he said.

"All the mined bauxite has been stockpiled at Baravi, an area near the jetty in Navakasiga because workers are still completing the construction work at the landing site."

The construction of the jetty is expected to be completed soon and employment opportunities are expected to be provided initially for the people of Bua.
