Australia’s bauxite export fluctuates QoQ through FY2016-2017

Australia is the dominant exporter of bauxite ore around the world. The country has five mines in Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland. The country exports major part of its bauxite to China.

According to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, Australia is expected to produce 82.7 million tonnes of bauxite in FY 2016-2017 (July-June), up 1.22% YOY. The two upcoming projects Metro Mining's Bauxite Hills project (5 million tpy) and Rio Tinto's Amrun project (23 million tpy) are anticipated to increase the country’s bauxite production in fiscal 2017-2018.

On a quarterly basis, Australia exported an estimated 5519790 tonnes of bauxite in the first quarter of 2016-2017. In the second quarter, the country exported 6469964 tonnes, an increase of 950174 tonnes of bauxite. The third quarter witnessed a fall in the export. In third quarter, the estimated bauxite export stood at 6000501tonnes and in quarter four, the amount stood at about 6536366 tonnes, the highest among the four quarters.  

The total export revenue stood at USD 185 million in the first quarter of 2016-2017. In second quarter, the export value stood at USD 209 million. In third and fourth quarter, the revenue stood at about USD 200 million and USD 217.44 million respectively.

In 2016, Australia exported an estimated 23049837 tonnes of bauxite to China followed by South Korea (341069 tonnes) and USA (169857 tonnes).
