Alupro urges people to recycle their festive aluminium packaging after the festive season

EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 3MINS READ

The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) which represents the leading aluminium packaging producers and reprocessors in the UK, urges people in UK to recycle their festive aluminium packaging after the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Aluminium is the mostly used household material during festive holidays. UK households use about 182 foil trays annually and the large part of it is used during the festive period. Alupro reminds people to recycle the foil trays alongside other food and drink packaging.

News
Aluminium foil trays are very easy to recycle if disposed properly.  The excess food on the tray should be scrapped into the bin and the trays could be given a wipe or a rinse under the tape to remove excess grease or any other residue. Removing food from the tray is important to avoid smell in the bin and also in order to have a smooth and efficient recycling process. Leftovers can contaminate other recyclable items and can clog up the recycling machine at the local recycling centre.

The aluminium foil trays can be quickly melted down and re-used to make all sorts of metal products including the foil trays within a very short time and saving up to 95% of the energy.  It is an infinite process and recycling the foil trays can also be a tiny loop in the whole process.

Alupro’s local council website provides a doorstep recycling program suitable for aluminium trays. Or there might be foil banks at supermarkets and recycling centres for dropping them.  The cleaned trays can be popped in the recycling box, bag or bin in a kerbside service along with other cans, tins and recyclables. The local council website can also provide locations of foil banks (and other useful recycling resources and advice). Alupro advises consumers to try the Recycle Now recycling locator to find all the nearest recycle points.

Alupro also advises to recycle the empty aerosol cans of deodorants, body sprays etc. the can shoud be completely empty and the plastic tops and caps should be removed before recycling. A typical UK household uses an average of 12m of aluminium foil every month and it grows multiple during the festivals due to roasting and storing of food. The wrapping foil can also be recycled .One can build a ball out of the wrappings then drop them in the recycling bin.

However, its necessary to differentiate between metallic-looking crisp packets or some sweet wrappers and aluminium foil. If the wrappers do not scrunch it can’t be recycled and has to go in the bin.

Alupro also mentions Nespresso coffee pods which are easily recyclable. One can order special recycle bags from Nespresso and the aluminium in the coffee pod is recycled along with the used coffee grounds becoming compost!
