
According to Aluminum Association’s latest highlights, imports of ingot, scrap and mill products into the U.S. and Canada (excluding crossborder trade) totaled 397,000 tonnes in April 2018, slightly up from the amount in April 2017.

Including scrap, which accounted for roughly 51.7 percent of reported aluminum exports in April, exports totaled 318,000 tonnes, up 21% over a year ago. Excluding scrap, exports totaled 154,000 tonnes, up 18% percent over last year. Exports of scrap increased 23.0 percent year-over-year. Through the first four months of 2018, imports were up 5.1 percent to 1.7 million tonnes, while exports were up 15.3% to 1.1 million pounds.
The Association’s “Index of Net New Orders of Aluminum Mill Products” for May 2018 increased 8.8% over April 2018. Orders for flat roll products (sheet, plate, can stock and foil) rose 10.3% over the previous month, while orders for extruded products were up 1.7% and orders for redraw rod rose 18.9%. Compared to May 2017, total orders increased 6.7% over the previous year. On average, orders recorded by domestic producers from January to May 2018 were up 5.5% in comparison to the same period of 2017.
