
According to the preliminary estimates from Aluminum Association, aluminium demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) totalled an estimated 7.5 million tonnes from January to July 2019, an increase of 1.3 per cent over YTD 2018.

Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products in the United States and Canada totalled 5.4 million pounds though July 2019, up 2.0 per cent YoY. Demand for semis stood at an estimated 765,663 tonnes in July, up 1.2 per cent over July 2018. Shipments of aluminium sheet and plate stood at 429,098 tonnes in July, up 2.5 per cent YoY. Extruded product shipments declined 1.2 per cent YoY to 220,446 tonnes. Estimated shipments of aluminium ingot for castings, exports and other uses stood at 239,950 tonnes in July, up 4.2 per cent YoY.
Exports of aluminium ingot and mill products from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) stood at 836,878 tonnes through the first seven months of 2019, off 5.5 per cent from YTD 2018, while imports increased 2.9 per cent to 2.4 million tonnes.
Apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic U.S. and Canadian markets stood at 885,865 tonnes in July, up 2.8 per cent over July 2018. Apparent consumption in domestic markets stood at an estimated 6.7 million tonnes during the period from January to July, up 2.3 per cent YoY. Producer inventories totalled 1.6 million tonnes in July, a slight increase over June 2019. Compared to a year ago, producer inventories were up an estimated 8.2 per cent.
The Aluminum Association, in cooperation with the Aluminium Association of Canada, reported primary aluminium production in North America (U.S. and Canada) was at an annual rate of 3,949,088 tonnes during August 2019, down 0.3% from the July 2019 rate of 3,959,885 tonnes. YoY, the North American annual rate was 6.2 per cent more than August 2018. Actual North American production in August 2019 stood at 335,402 tonnes.
