Aluminium Bahrain BSC (Alba), the world’s largest aluminium smelter operating on a single site, has initiated a controlled and safe shutdown of Reduction Lines 1, 2 and 3. These lines account for approximately 19 per cent of Alba’s total annual production capacity of 1.62 million tonnes. The shutdown is a precautionary measure amid supply and transit disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz, intended to safeguard operational continuity and optimise the use of available raw material inventories.

With temporary suspension of operations at these lines, Alba will focus production on Reduction Lines 4, 5 and 6, allowing the smelter to allocate strategic raw materials more efficiently and maintain a sustainable and stable operating configuration. The approach aims to preserve production resilience, effectively managing working capital and lowering exposure to volatility caused by short-term supply.
During the shutdown period, Alba will also undertake structured asset care and maintenance at the affected lines. It will cover equipment upkeep, cleaning and housekeeping to optimise operational integrity for a safe restart of operations once supply conditions stabilise.
Alba is closely monitoring the evolving situation, working with suppliers and customers to manage contractual commitments and mitigate disruptions. Prioritising employees and contractor safety, asset protection and supply reliability remain top priorities.
The shutdown is being carried out in a controlled process, framed to minimise health, safety, operational and environmental hazards, while protecting the long-term asset performance.
