Rio Tinto’s Bell Bay aluminium smelter secures five-year extension with $200m support
Rio Tinto’s Bell Bay aluminium smelter in Tasmania has secured a five-year extension, with federal and state governments providing a USD 200 million support package to keep the facility operating until the end of 2031. The agreement ends months of uncertainty over the smelter’s future, with its existing electricity supply agreement with Hydro Tasmania due to expire on December 31. Under the new arrangement, Hydro Tasmania will continue supplying power to Bell Bay through 2031, while government support will help maintain the smelter’s competitiveness. LME aluminium cash bid drops $22 to $3,203 as Asian reference price falls 1.38%
LME aluminium prices extended their decline on September 30, with cash and futures contracts moving lower. The Asian Reference Price also fell, while LME stocks remained broadly unchanged. Alumina Platts prices, however, rose sharply. The cash bid fell 0.68 per cent to USD 3,203 per tonne from USD 3,225 per tonne previously , while the cash offer declined 0.67 per cent to USD 3,204 per tonne from USD 3,225.50 per tonne. Three-month aluminium prices also weakened, with the bid down 0.71 per cent at USD 3,208 per tonne from USD 3,231 per tonne. The offer slipped 0.68 per cent to USD 3,210 per tonne from USD 3,232 per tonne. China’s aluminium imports flat, exports slump; molten-metal shift keeps physical ingot tight despite 163,600 tonnes net inflow
According to data released by the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China(GACC), China’s primary aluminium imports totalled 185,500 tonnes in August 2026, down 14.65 per cent year-on-year (YoY) and up just 0.16 per cent month-on-month (MoM). For January–August, cumulative imports reached 1.66 million tonnes, down 3.41 per cent YoY. August exports stood at 21,900 tonnes, down 14.53 per cent YoY and 30.48 per cent MoM. Cumulative exports for the first eight months were 167,500 tonnes, up 9.26 per cent YoY. Net imports in August came to 163,600 tonnes, down 14.67 per cent YoY but up 6.44 per cent MoM; the January–August cumulative net import total was 1.49 million tonnes, down 4.65 per cent YoY. Neuman Aluminium’s Mexico expansion gets Jasper’s 40-tonne melting furnace
Neuman Aluminium has selected a 40-tonne aluminium melting furnace from industrial furnace supplier Jasper for Hirschvogel’s site in San Juan del Río, Mexico, to expand aluminium production at the facility. After Neuman’s melting furnace upgrade at its Marktl headquarters in Austria , the company is deepening its footprint in North America. Neuman Aluminium recently partnered with Hirschvogel for the project. Construction has begun on two production halls, each spanning 7,500 square metres, with production scheduled to start at the beginning of 2028. NALCO to reach ₹190-200 billion revenue as ₹250 billion FY31 expansion target progresses
National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) expects revenue to reach INR 190-200 billion (USD 2.29–2.41 billion) in the current year, supported by higher alumina production and stronger aluminium prices, while an INR 250-billion (USD 3.01 billion) expansion programme is set to reshape its upstream, smelting and power capacities by FY31. The state-owned aluminium producer expects revenue to increase from approximately INR 178 billion (USD 2.14 billion) last year as its new refinery capacity lifts alumina production and higher aluminium prices support realisations. Inventory changes of aluminium ingots and billets around the 2026 National Day
According to SMM statistics, changes in aluminium ingot and aluminium billet (collectively referred to as aluminium inventory) inventories in major consumption areas in China around the National Day holiday, 2020-2026: overall destocking before the holiday, with the most concentrated inventory buildup during the holiday. During the one-week National Day holiday from 2020 to 2025, aluminium ingots, aluminium billets, and total aluminium inventory all saw inventory buildup (aluminium ingots up 4.0 per cent -17.3 per cent, aluminium billets up 12.7 per cent -66.0 per cent, total aluminium inventory up 6.9 per cent -21.2 per cent ).
