Aluminum investment has been spreading across the entire value chain, from primary smelting and alumina refining to recycling, rolling, extrusion and battery foil, building more integrated and higher-value supply chains. During the past 5 years, the US and Canada in North America and China in Asia have been grabbing headlines pertaining to the aluminum industry. These updates have involved growth stories or have shed light on volatile market situations. How have these headlines contributed to a greater picture for the benefit of the aluminum industries of the two continents? Between 2021 and 2026, major projects across North America and Asia have targeted new primary capacity, lower-carbon production, recycled aluminum and higher-value downstream products. But the investment pattern is...

The centre of the SHFE aluminium 2609 contract futures moved lower today compared with the same period yesterday. Continued arrivals in east China fuelled active selling sentiment, making it difficult for spot discounts in the region to narrow significantly. Today, spot premiums for A00 aluminium ingot were transacted at discounts of RMB 40 per tonne to parity. SHFE aluminium futures pulled back, but trading sentiment in the central China market remained sluggish. With the deepening off-season, buying sentiment among downstream processing enterprises stayed low. Against the backdrop of falling aluminium prices, suppliers showed a strong willingness to hold prices firm, but overall trading volume was low. Ultimately, the actual transaction price range in the central China market centred...

The United States exported about 1.25 million tonnes of aluminium-bearing scrap in the first half of 2026, up 21 per cent from 1.03 million tonnes during the same period last year. The figures, based on US Census Bureau data cited by Davis Index, show that more recycled aluminium is leaving the country even as domestic producers and policymakers debate whether the material should be retained to support US supply chains. Thailand and India lead purchases Thailand was the largest destination for US aluminium scrap in the first six months of 2026, receiving 268,000 tonnes. India followed with 233,350 tonnes, while Malaysia, South Korea and Hong Kong rounded out the top five destinations with 160,700 tonnes, 139,500 tonnes and 136,200 tonnes respectively. All five markets increased their...

The Indian government is moving to allow bauxite and other major minerals to be traded on an exchange, in a move aimed at making mineral trading more transparent and improving price discovery. The exchange is likely to become operational by the next financial year, with the initial list expected to include iron ore, bauxite, limestone and manganese. The Ministry of Mines has notified rules for setting up the exchange and appointed the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) as the nodal agency and regulator. The IBM will invite applications from companies seeking to set up and operate the exchange. For bauxite producers and traders, the proposed exchange could provide a more structured mechanism for price discovery and transactions. According to government officials, the platform is also expected to...

Recent weeks have witnessed a flurry of spot transactions in the overseas alumina market, with prices exhibiting a broadly upward trajectory. As market participants shift their focus from mere price movements to underlying fundamentals, the sustainability of this rally and its potential impact on Chinese supply-demand dynamics have become central themes. Of particular interest is whether the divergence between firm overseas prices and weakening domestic values can open an export arbitrage window, thereby absorbing excess domestic supply. Near-term overseas alumina market is driven by new and restarted aluminium smelters' restocking, Hormuz-linked logistical bottlenecks, and bagged-alumina premiums, yet with Chinese FOB prices still about USD 30 per tonne above Australian benchmarks, the...

China is importing bauxite at a pace that raises a bigger question for the aluminium market: why are imports still climbing when the country is moving towards a 45-million-tonne primary aluminium production capacity cap? In H1 2026, China imported 121 million tonnes of bauxite, up from 103 million tonnes in H1 2025, a rise of 17.5 per cent. Imports were also well above the 77 million tonnes recorded in H1 2024, after rising 33.8 per cent between H1 2024 and H1 2025. If we see, quarter on quarter, China imported 58 million tonnes in Q1 2026, followed by 63 million tonnes in Q2, an increase of around 8.6 per cent. The quarterly numbers were also significantly higher than in previous years. China imported 47 million tonnes in Q1 and 56 million tonnes in Q2 2025, while imports in 2024 stood...

The future of Bell Bay Aluminium smelter in Tasmania remains dependent on the outcome of negotiations over its electricity supply agreement. Federal Industry Minister of Australia Tim Ayres has stopped short of committing federal funding similar to the support extended to the Tomago aluminium smelter in New South Wales. While Canberra has acknowledged the strategic importance of Bell Bay and its employment base, Ayres has stressed that the immediate priority is securing a commercially sustainable power agreement between Hydro Tasmania and Rio Tinto. To know the production, demand and consumption forecasts on bauxite and alumina, explore the report “ Global Bauxite & Alumina Market Forecast to 2036: Supply–Demand, Trade Flows & Price Outlook ” Bell Bay faces a different challenge from...

China is helping cushion Western aluminium markets after production losses in the Gulf caused by the Iran conflict. Yet the export surge could come with a longer-term cost: more aluminium processing activity may shift from Western manufacturers to Chinese producers. China, the world’s largest aluminium producer, has increased exports of primary metal, alloy and semi-finished aluminium products as Western supply chains adjust to reduced Gulf output. The additional material has helped reduce the market’s immediate supply stress. Alloy and semis drive exports China’s export pattern is strongly shaped by its tax system. Primary aluminium exports face a 30 per cent tax, while aluminium alloy and semi-finished products, known as semis, can be exported at a zero tax rate. As a result, much of...

A women’s shelter in New South Wales has reportedly received an extraordinary financial boost after the Australian Government allegedly mistook it for an aluminium smelter. According to the humorous report, the government had recently approved AUD 2.5 billion (USD 1.76 billion) in taxpayer support for Rio Tinto’s Tomago aluminium smelter near Newcastle. When a women’s shelter later applied for AUD 2,500 (USD 1,760) in assistance, officials supposedly confused the two applications. The mix-up turned a modest request for support into a multibillion-dollar package because apparently, the difference between a shelter and a smelter is just one letter and several billion dollars. A very expensive misunderstanding In the report, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese explains that the wording of the...

New IAI data show that closing the can-to-can loop, not simply collecting more cans, will decide whether the industry produces 207 billion or 685 billion recycled cans by 2050. A Six Sigma study from Kentucky, co-authored nearly two decades ago by Dr Subodh K. Das, offers a strikingly relevant blueprint for treating every unrecycled can as a preventable process defect. Aluminium's most-quoted recycling statistic keeps getting bigger, but a new analysis from the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) suggests that scale alone will not decide how much of that metal comes back as new cans. According to the IAI’s September 2025 factsheet, "Can-to-Can Recycling: Performance, Potential and Pathways," the industry currently puts around 420 billion aluminium beverage cans on the market every...

Ardagh Holdings, the controlling shareholder of Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP), is preparing for a possible sale of the beverage can maker, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Ardagh Holdings has instructed advisers to explore a potential transaction that could involve selling some or all of its indirectly held stake in AMP to a third-party buyer. Another option would be for Ardagh Holdings to acquire the AMP shares it does not currently own and then sell the entire company to a third party. To learn the future of aluminium in the packaging industry, explore our report " ALuminium in Packaging: Consumer Trends and Market Dynamics " A sale could also increase AMP's operating costs.
