Aluminium sulphate producer Chilmund Chemicals is preparing to export its water treatment chemicals to several regional countries as a part of its strategy for regional expansion. During the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Industrialisation Week, Business Development Director Mr Nicholas Bhero revealed that production had surged three-fold since the company's inception, creating a surplus that will be exported to neighbouring nations.

Chilmund Chemicals Pvt Ltd is a global leader in water solutions, specializing in producing water treatment chemicals. The company's flagship product is manufactured at its state-of-the-art plant in Bindura, Zimbabwe, and provides comprehensive water solutions to diverse markets across Africa.

What is aluminium sulphate

Aluminium sulphate is a salt with the formula Al₂(SO₄)₃. It is used in water purification and removing chemical phosphorus from wastewater. It promotes the coagulation of suspended impurities by causing them to aggregate into larger particles. These clumped particles either settle at the bottom of the container or can be more easily filtered out. This process is referred to as coagulation or flocculation.

"We manufacture 7 500 tonnes every month, and our local market only consumes 1500 tonnes," he said. "We can now export to several African countries, and we are happy to say that some of the countries have been amenable to our expertise in manufacturing water chemicals. A few weeks ago, our company was featured in a Malawian newspaper. Following the article, the Malawian Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, promised to visit our Bindura plant in August to appreciate our manufacturing processes," stated Business Development Director Mr. Nicholas Bhero.

Company submitted bids

Mr. Bhero mentioned that the company has submitted bids in several African countries to supply water treatment chemicals. "We are the only company producing non-ferrous aluminium sulphate in Southern and East Africa at the moment. That gives us a competitive edge," commented Bhero, adding that the technology used at Chilmund Chemicals is environmentally sustainable as it does not produce emissions.

Additionally, Mr. Bhero noted that the water treatment chemical is iron-free. Each batch is subjected to stringent testing to ensure that the aluminium content remains between 16 and 17 per cent, adhering to international standards. The US$25 million chemical plant, inaugurated by President Mnangagwa in October of last year, produces both granular and liquid aluminium sulphate. Chilmund Chemicals currently employs 160 permanent staff members.
