Vedanta project: Centre, state differ on holding gram sabhas in Niyamgiri

While the State Government has maintained that it is not working to protect the interest of any private company, the Centre has alleged that the State Government has violated the Supreme Court’s order in this regard.
In a letter to Governor S C Jamir on June 21, Union Tribal Affairs Minister V Kishore Chandra Deo had alleged that the State was colluding with the private company on its bauxite mining project and suppressing the rights of affected Scheduled Tribes.
Deo had requested the Governor to invoke his constitutional powers to protect the interests of tribals. He had claimed that the State Government was “treating with scant respect,” the Supreme Court’s order on April 18. The State Government, however, maintained that it is abiding by the Supreme Court order and ready to hold ‘gram sabhas.’
Minister for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development L B Himirika, however, has said the State Government is not working on any company’s behalf.
