According to latest data reported by the US Geological Survey, the United States’ aluminium crude metals and alloys imports from Russia rebounded to 22,900 tonnes in December 2021, seeing a sharp rise of 165.35 per cent month-on-month. In November 2021, the imports plummeted by 63.43 per cent to 8,630 tonnes from 23,600 tonnes in October. That brought the total amount of the United States’ aluminium crude metals and alloys imports from Russia in the last quarter of 2021 (Q4) to 55,130 tonnes, down by 4.73 per cent or 2,740 tonnes from 57,870 tonnes in Q3 2021.

Nonetheless, the United States aluminium crude metals and alloys imports from Russia in H2 2021 increased by 41.96 per cent from 79,600 tonnes in H1 to 113,000 tonnes.
On a year-on-year calculation, the United States’ aluminium extrusion imports in December 2021 stood 124.51 per cent higher than 10,200 tonnes, found the US Census Bureau data.
In the third quarter, the imports volume plunged in the last month by 62.47 per cent to 9,570 tonnes, following the past two months of consecutive rises to 22,800 tonnes and 25,500 tonnes, respectively. However, the subsequent quarter opened with a month-on-month hike of 146.60 per cent.
From January to December 2021, the United States imported 193,000 tonnes of aluminium extrusions from Russia, compared to 113,000 tonnes a year ago. That was a rise of 80,000 tonnes or 70.80 per cent year-on-year at the end of 2021.
The United States’ total aluminium crude metals and alloys imports in December 2021 stood at 316,000 tonnes, reflecting a downfall of 6.51 per cent from 338,000 tonnes in November. In Q4, the country’s aluminium crude metals and alloys imports amounted to 993,000 tonnes, up by 9.97 per cent quarter-on-quarter from 903,000 tonnes.
Recently, the United States joined the European Union and other nations in announcing a series of unprecedented sanctions on Russia in response to the latter’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24. This may impact the United States’ aluminium imports volume from Russia in the time to come.
