Texarkana Aluminum has rolled its first coil following the commissioning of a major hot mill expansion project at its Texas facility, featuring a new four-stand hot tandem mill supplied by Mino.
{alcircleadd}The project began in 2023 after Mino received a contract to design, supply, and commission the mill. The new equipment was installed as an extension to the existing single-stand reversing hot mill, converting the plant into a “1+4 Hot Rolling Line”. In this setup, the older mill acts as the roughing stand, while the four new stands are used for hot finishing.

The company said the new configuration is intended to improve production rates and product quality, including thickness tolerance, strip crown, flatness, and final coil temperature. The shorter time between rolling passes also helps prevent recrystallisation of the aluminium, improving the material structure required for applications such as automotive, aerospace, can-stock, foil-stock, and transportation products.
Before shipment to the United States, the tandem mill was fully pre-assembled at Mino’s workshop in Alessandria. This included piping, sensors, and electrical cabling.

The mill has work roll barrel lengths of 79 inches (2,000 mm) and can roll aluminium down to 0.079 inch (2 mm) for soft alloys and 0.138 inch (3.5 mm) for hard alloys. Each stand has a rolling force of 3,500 tonnes and an installed power of 5,000 kW, while the total installed power of the system is 43,000 kW. The cooling system has a flow rate of 36,000 litres per minute. The line also includes edge trimming equipment, scrap choppers, AGC systems, and profile measurement controls.

The project used very large equipment, including eight cast steel housings at 115 tonnes each, gearboxes weighing up to 130 tonnes, and a total assembly weight of nearly 2,000 tonnes. Total supplied equipment exceeded 3,000 tonnes. Shipping the machinery from Italy to Texas required 200 containers and 80 cases.
TKA said the expansion will help meet rising demand for 1xxx, 3xxx, and 5xxx aluminium coils across several industrial sectors.
