Sweden recycles aluminum, along with China and Brazil
One project is aimed at the Chinese market and the second project for the Brazilian market. Both projects deal with waste analysis for increased recycling and reduced ecological footprint of aluminum production.
- If we can take advantage of aluminum and recycle this, we make energy savings of about 95 percent compared with remanufacturing, says Jonas Gurell, research director at Swerea KIMAB. Overall, this is a huge saving and it is incredibly stimulating to be with and introduce this possibility in countries like China and Brazil, where demand for the material is growing, and the need for recycling.
In addition to establishing a strong collaboration between different stakeholders, the project will strengthen Swedish recycling industry's competitiveness by Swerea KIMAB and Acreo Swedish ICT is developing a tool for online analysis of aluminum scrap. The project will also identify potential partners for the development and commercialization of the technology.
Over the coming months, intensive efforts continue to prepare for laboratory and field tests of Stena Aluminium Ltd in Älmhult, Sweden's only smelter for secondary aluminum and Stena Recycling AB in Halmstad. This work will also be combined with the initial market research in China, Brazil and Sweden. The year will end with the interested future participants were invited to the workshop with a focus on China and Brazil.
During the first half of 2013, the laboratory and field tests to be conducted with a prototype setup. It will also carry out industrial visit to China and Brazil. The results of the projects will be presented during the summer of 2013.
