Within the next six months, city folk will see new solar-powered recycling bins in the city. Known as the 3R Box, the bins will also act as an advertising tool to promote recycling. It will be placed in public places such as busy walkways.

This is to encourage the public to help reduce, reuse and recycle.

The pilot project in the city was launched by mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman at the Petaling Jaya City Council. Also present was Selangor executive council member Elizabeth Wong.

The public can throw recyclable items such as paper, aluminium cans, batteries and plastic bottles into the box which has four compartments for the items.

The cost of producing and maintaining the recycling box will be borne by a private company called Tyewei Marketing Sdn Bhd.

However, the items collected will be sold to a recycling centre and the profit collected will be channelled towards green initiatives in the city. The company is expected to profit from the advertising revenue collected from the panel advertisements.

Roslan said the city welcomes efforts to save the environment and wants to encourage the public, especially the young to reduce, reuse and recycle.

The mayor added the council had embarked on many green initiatives and the 3R Box is the latest.

"The first 3R Box will be placed outside Sunway Giza in Kota Damansara. Kota Damansara was chosen as the Zone Bersih by the council this year and we will start from there.

"The council estimates to see about 300 such bins in the city," Roslan said.

Starting end of this month, the council will also reach out to the schools in the city to spread the importance of keeping the city clean, he said.

Tyewei Marketing Sdn Bhd sales director Johnson Yoon said the bin runs on 50 watts of solar power.

The box will have four advertising panels which will be lit with the solar power. Yoon said the advertising panel on the bin will stay lit for three days using the stored energy, if the weather is gloomy.

The bin will also look attractive and this will encourage people to recycle. The project was first launched in Penang and was said to be well received by the public.

"The 3R Box will become a street furniture with a purpose. It costs about RM7,000 and is made of steel," Yoon said.

The items thrown in the bin will be collected about twice in three days. The company will also ensure the bin always looks clean and attractive. This is to ensure the brands advertised on the panel are well represented.

Yoon added that the four advertising panels must also convey messages on green initiatives.
