S Korea's Hyundai to seek ADC12 aluminum via tender in June: sources

South Korea's largest automaker, Hyundai Motor, plans to issue a tender seeking ADC12 aluminum alloy later this month, Japanese market sources said Tuesday.
Hyundai typically issues its tender after Toyota Motor, but the Japanese automaker has postponed its June tender to July because of production cuts in the wake of the March 11 earthquake. The forthcoming tender is for July-September aluminum supplies.
Trade sources said Hyundai is likely to issue the quarterly aluminum alloy tender either in the third or fourth week of the month.
South Korean secondary aluminum smelters that regularly participate in the Hyundai tenders have been importing ADC12 alloy from China in the past two weeks, several Tokyo trade sources said.
Hyundai Motor's procurement office was not available to comment.
Separately, Hyundai Motor said last week its domestic car sales posted a strong 37.7% year-on-year growth to 36,275 vehicles in May. Domestic sales of commercial vehicles and sports utility vehicles fell, but its total May sales were still up 17.3% year on year to 57,750 vehicles.
