Russian news agency, Sputnik, reported yesterday, March 3 that the parent company of Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc. (BCGI) RUSAL has suspended their bauxite operation due to the on-going strike by the workers. The media report also confirmed moving of all mining equipment to a warehouse after suspension. There is a pay conflict going on between Rusal and the mining employees in the South American nation.

In an email statement on Sunday, Rusal said that the workers at Bauxite Company of Guyana Ltd. "declined to work and demanded a pay increase, even though their salaries had been adjusted for forecast inflation at the end of last year."
On Saturday, Guyanese media Demerara Waves reported that the local government was considering a temporary shutdown of Rusal operations after the company had suspended 61 employees for walking off the job demanding higher salaries.
Rusal report said they suspended mining at the bauxite unit on Feb. 15 and moved equipment to a guarded warehouse. The company report also says that Rusal is holding talks with the Guyana government on the clash with labours. The company demands that the employees work in accordance with the labour contract. Rusal has about 500 employees in Guyana.
On the other hand, a representative from the striking workers from the Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc. (BCGI) has denied claims to the local media that Rusal has suspended operations and moved their equipment to storage.
Speaking to Stabroek News last night, Leslie Junor, the secretary of the Guyana Bauxite and General Workers Union (GB&GWU) denied the claims by the Russian news agency and called it a normal tactic to put pressure on the workers.
