Potential aluminium recycler and dross company put into liquidation

Taha Asia Pacific, associated with Tiwai Point aluminium smelter was closed on Tuesday, and put into liquidation. This came a day after the company's recycling contract at the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter expired, revealed industry reports.

The company had a five-year contract with New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS) to take dross syphoned off from the main aluminium smelting operation. It would then re-process the dross to further extract aluminium for recycling at the main plant.

The shutdown has put the jobs of twenty-two staff at stake. Taha's liquidator Rhys Cain, from Ernst and Young, said their position was still being worked on. He, however, did not comment on the contract the company had with Tiwai Point smelter.

NZAS general manager Gretta Stephens said in a statement yesterday that nearly all Taha employees who wanted work at NZAS had been given temporary roles. This was done by working with an external recruitment company.

Taha Asia Pacific is based in Bahrain. A report is being prepared currently for the company's Office with a deadline of next Tuesday.
