Novelis introduces its first “high recycled content” aluminium production
The firms can product, aluminium can body sheets guaranteed to contain at least 90% recycled content, is being offered to European and North American drinks packaging firms initially before being expected to go global.
Once a standard drinks can has been completed companies can claim it is made from at least 70% recycled aluminium.
The recycled content is certified by international standards company SCS Global Services.
Environmental campaigner Jonathon Porritt, founder director of Forum for the Future, said: “This is a really exciting development. The benefits of using recycled rather than prime-based aluminium are well understood, and for Novelis to be able to guarantee 90% recycled content beverage can body sheet represents a real breakthrough.”
Phil Martens, Novelis president and chief executive, said: “This is an important step toward delivering on our ultimate vision of an aluminium can with up to 100% recycled content.”
Novelis plans to increase the recycled content of its products to 80% by 2020. It has announced capital investments of close to $500m over the last two years and is expected to double global recycling capacity to 2.1m metric tonnes by 2015.
Recycling aluminium requires 95% less energy, and produces 95% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than manufacturing primary aluminium.
