North America’s aluminium extrusion demand is rising. Who is meeting the supply gap?

The supply question is becoming particularly relevant as North American extrusion demand becomes more diversified. Construction remains an important consumption base, but transportation, electrical and electronics, industrial applications and digital infrastructure are creating additional requirements for higher-performance aluminium extrusion profiles. The shift is also changing what buyers need from suppliers, with greater emphasis on precision, complex geometries, automotive-grade alloys and thermal-management capabilities.

North American aluminium extrusion usage is estimated at 2.91 million tonnes in 2025 and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 2 per cent. The region is therefore set for incremental demand, even as its extrusion supply chain continues to evolve.

Why is there a supply gap if North America has sufficient capacity?

North America is in a restructuring phase, with moderate demand growth occurring alongside plant rationalisation, capacity transfers and greater emphasis on specialised, high-value and locally supplied profiles. 

Recent investments have increasingly focused on large-scale and industrial extrusion rather than simply adding commodity architectural capacity. This creates opportunities in areas where the required capability may not match available general-purpose capacity, particularly:

  • Heavy structural profiles
  • Ultra-wide profiles
  • Technically demanding industrial extrusions
  • Automotive and EV components
  • Electrical and thermal-management profiles
  • Fabricated and engineered extrusion solutions

Which applications will add to North American demand?

The region's incremental demand is expected to come from a broader mix of end-use sectors rather than construction alone.

The electrical and electronics segment is particularly relevant as North America's electricity infrastructure expands. Data centres are another emerging demand vector, with extrusions used in server racks, equipment enclosures, cooling systems, heat sinks, heat exchangers and structural components.

So, who is positioned to meet the gap?

The emerging opportunity is less about adding another commodity extrusion press and more about supplying the right profile, in the right specification, close to the customer. There are several characteristics that can define competitive advantage through 2035:

  1. Specialisation: Producers capable of manufacturing technically demanding and application-specific profiles can address segments where standard capacity may not be sufficient.
  2. Customer proximity: As automotive, industrial, electrical and infrastructure supply chains become more regionalised, proximity to downstream customers becomes increasingly important.
  3. Recycling and low-carbon billet: North America's established recycling infrastructure creates opportunities to supply customers seeking recycled content and lower-carbon aluminium.
  4. Value-added processing: Machining, finishing, fabrication and system-level engineering can help producers move beyond basic mill-finish extrusion and capture higher-value demand.

In this context, the region's extrusion market is moving towards a consolidate, specialise and localise model, with competitive advantage increasingly linked to utilisation, technical capability, customer proximity and low-carbon feedstock rather than press capacity alone.

What does this mean for the North American extrusion market?

As demand shifts towards specialised profiles for transportation, electrical infrastructure, industrial applications and data centres, the critical question becomes whether existing capacity can meet these requirements in terms of product type, specification, processing capability and location. 

The resulting opportunity is therefore not simply a race to add tonnes. It is a shift towards higher-value extrusion capacity aligned with where North American manufacturing demand is heading.

What does the shift mean for extrusion producers?

North America’s extrusion opportunity is increasingly about capability rather than capacity alone. The region has an estimated 5.49 Mt of installed extrusion capacity against 2.91 Mt of demand in 2025, while demand is forecast to add around 0.63 Mt by 2035. This indicates that future investment decisions will need to focus on whether existing and new capacity can serve the specifications demanded by faster-growing applications.

The strongest opportunities are emerging beyond conventional architectural profiles. Electrical and electronics demand in North America is projected to increase by around 30 per cent between 2025 and 2035, while industrial extrusion demand could rise by approximately 37 per cent. Transportation demand is also expected to expand by around 26 per cent. These shifts favour producers with capabilities in complex geometries, large structural profiles, thermal-management components, fabrication and application-specific solutions.
