No guarantee on Steve Irwin reserve's safety from mining

More than 600 people, led by Terri Irwin, had signed a petition calling on the Government to ensure no mining applications would be approved in the area.
Cape Alumina is conducting environmental assessments for a proposed bauxite project on part of the reserve.
It has been declared a "significant project" by the Queensland coordinator-general.
Mr Cripps has responded to the petition, saying the project will undergo rigorous assessment to ensure the environment and native title rights are protected.
