Newman to help Rio by cutting red, green tape

Mr Newman said he would streamline red and green tape for mining laws in Queensland, but did not plan to override environmental law, the AFR reported.
“We will need to do things to make sure these and other projects can proceed far more smoothly than they are now. There is an enormous amount of red and green tape,” he said.
“The point is we’ve still got to work with the Commonwealth to see the ultimate approvals.”
The AFR said Mr Newman did not want to replay the impasse over GVK/Hancock Coal Alpha’s $6.4 billion Alpha Coal project in Central Queensland. In that instance, the project's assessment was taken over by the federal government.
