An Australia-based mining and exploration company, Metro Mining, have charted their ambitious target of ramping up its production to 7 million tonnes by the end of 2025. This plan has been drafted with consideration of the expansion capacity and lowering of the overall costs in the production process.
Well known by all the industry experts, bauxite is a primary ore that is heavily used for aluminium production, which is deemed to be a lightweight and valuable metal and a vital aspect for the global energy transition. Moreover, the demand for aluminium is expected to double in the coming years, with sectors like transportation, clean energy, and electric vehicles being the key drivers.
In Q2 FY2025, the mining company successfully delivered record-high bauxite shipments, which surpassed the previous year by 19 per cent. Within this quarter, the firm continued to operate at a sustained annualised production rate of 7 million tonnes.
Tracing back the company's performance in June 2025, it had unlocked a new monthly shipment record, reaching 589,000 wet tonnes, reflecting an increase of 16 per cent year-on-year. Irrespective of the challenges like logistics at Skardon River, strategic moves like infrastructure upgradation, robust resource reserves, contract pricing for Q3 and proactive maintenance contributed to the achievement.
As of May 2025, the firm had gained a 26 per cent year-on-year growth in its monthly bauxite shipments, with the total delivery standing at 671,934 wet tonnes, marking it as a key milestone towards the annual target. This upward movement of the bauxite shipment continued from April, where the growth witnessed was 12.2 per cent from the previous year, albeit the all-time single-month record remained at 720,000 wet tonnes as set in August 2024.
Achievements like this had been significantly possible for the firm by enhancing the infrastructure upgrades of the mining fleets, marine loading facilities and the conveyors.
To date, Metro Mining has produced as well as sold more than 2 million tonnes of its production in the second half of 2025 and is expected to have a "very strong" year, where the production volume is expected to outperform and conclude between 4.5 million and 5 million tonnes before the year ends.
