Lam Dong bauxite mining project faces pollution fines

Authorities of the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong Thursday are considering fining leaders of a government bauxite mining project that has leaked toxic chemicals into a local lake.

Inspectors of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment had found that chemical substances leaked from a plant belonging to the Lam Dong Bauxite-Alumina Complex in Bao Lam District.

Rains washed the substances into the Tan Rai Alumina Plant’s drainage facility before running into a large fish pond owned by some local residents.

Tests showed the lake’s water had excessive pH content, the inspectors said.

Inspections had been carried out since August after local people lodged complaints with the Bao Lam District authorities that fish had died in massive numbers in the lake because of water pollution.

The lake also supplied water for tea and coffee farms for some households and a company in the area.

The US$460 million Tan Rai alumina plant is one of the two bauxite mining plants invested in by the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Corporation (Vinacomin).
