Indian Govt to decide on Andhra Pradesh Bauxite mining

Mr Reddy was in Paderu on the third day of his tour of the district. Referring to the demand for cancellation of bauxite mining leases to AP Mineral Development Corporation and MoUs on supply of ore to Jindal and AnRak companies, he said the state and the country would have to follow the rules.
“The Centre is contemplating bringing in an enactment in this regard. There are environmental concerns. If the enactment comes soon, we will go by it. If not we will study if we can take action as per the existing Acts,” he explained. The Chief Minister said the Centre granted mining leases in 2007 to APMDC.
When a reporter asked if the state government would reconsider the lease of mines and MoUs in view of protests and bandh call, he replied evasively, “Where was the bandh?”
Opponents of bauxite mining had been expecting a more definite pronouncement from the CM on the issue, but had to be content with his promise to follow the rules.
The Chief Minister also said the state government would consider directing all buses to remove tinted films from the glass windows in view of the rape of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi.
“It is an act by anti-social elements. However, we will take stringent action in such cases,” the Chief Minister said.
