India Mines Minister Piyush Goyal made it clear that he is favour of imposing minimum import price (MIP) on aluminium to safeguard Indian aluminium industry from the onslaughts of subsidized aluminium imports that are being shipped in excess quantity from China and the Middle East.
"My personal view is that an MIP on aluminium products should be imposed as I would like to protect the domestic aluminium industry. There is a strong case that dumping is happening and we need to correct it," Goyal said in a recent press conference.
The minister opined the MIP on aluminium should be at par with the one imposed by the Indian government on steel, which too has been suffering from similar dumping related market atrocities.
Goyal said that India cannot be allowed to become the dumping ground of cheap metal products for countries like China and Middle East, and the government will see to it that every possible step is taken to ensure that. But he added Indian aluminium makers should examine the pros and cons of the matter in more detail before any decision is made. .jpg)
The state-run consultancy firm Mecon is right now preparing a report on MIP for aluminium products based on the data provided by the industry.
"We are examining all aspects and will take a decision on the matter in the near future. The Finance and Commerce Ministry, however, will take a final call on this (MIP on aluminium)," said Goyal.
