Government to ease Ewarton bauxite woes

The cost of production and the decreased demand for alumina has continued to take a toll on the company.
The high cost of electricity has also been blamed for the financial woes plaguing the company.
Earlier this year, there were also jitters that the Ewarton plant was heading for another shutdown, after the company began removing equipment to a plant in Guyana.
However, it was later revealed that equipment was owned by a third party entity.
Since coming into office, the government has been in discussions with the owners of Ewarton, UC Rusal, to look at ways to provide a boost to the company.
Responding to questions at yesterday’s sitting of Parliament’s Standing Finance Committee, Energy and Mining Minister, Phillip Paulwell signalled that an understanding has been reached.
