At the recently held National Seminar in Mumbai, organised by Aluminium Association of India and sponsored by Hindalco, Nalco, Vedanta and TKIS on developments of special alloys and composites of aluminium, Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand, CMD of Nalco and President of Aluminium Association of India, projected an optimistic apprehension on high-strength aluminium alloy. He said that the demand for the high-strength aluminium alloy will increase by five-fold in the next ten years. According to Orissa Report Diary, many other aluminium stalwarts including the Consul General of Italy, Senior Government Officials, CEOs and Senior Executives of different organisations had also put an emphasis on a whole new world of opportunities lying ahead for the ‘wonder metal’.

While expressing concerns over only 300 odd applications of aluminium in India as against 3000 globally, Dr. Chand highlighted on the importance of research and development activities on various aluminium alloy applications across various sectors. He also pitched for the reduction of energy cost and coarse correction in tax structure to make the industry more competitive.

According to Dr. Chand, often addressed as ‘Metal Man’ for having an immense knowledge and experience in aluminium and steel industry, the Aluminium Association of India should urge the Indian Government for forming an Aluminium Development Council as a step towards developing the industry and protecting interest for the sector.

Ms. Stefania Costanza, Consul General Republic, Mumbai and the Guest of Honour at the event, also expressed her enthusiasm about the prospects of knowledge sharing in Aluminium sector. She said, “Italy is second largest country in Europe in Aluminium business and we hope for more collaboration in future on a sustainable basis.”
