
According to China Customs data, the country’s aluminium strip, rod and shapes exports in December stood at 98,500 tonnes, up 31.7 per cent year-on-year and 3.34 per cent month-on-month.
For the whole year of 2018, exports of aluminium strip, rod and shapes by China expanded 17.12 per cent and came in at 975,400 tonnes. The products are under HS codes of 76041090, 76042100, 76042990, 7604291 and 76041010.
{alcircleadd}As for the aluminium alloy wheels, China exported 80,800 tonnes in December, up 2.5 per cent from a year earlier, showed data from China Customs. The graph below thus shows that China’s aluminium strip, rod and shapes exports were 22 per cent higher than the exports of aluminium alloy wheels in December 2018.

However, although China’s exports volume of aluminium alloy wheels grew in December 2018 year-on-year, its revenues dropped by 5.2 per cent to US$362 million from the same period last year.
For the entire year of 2018, China’s exports of aluminium alloy wheels stood at 994,100 tonnes, exceeding 950,000 tonnes for the first time. This equates to 99.41 million units of wheels, up 7.3% from 2017, if 10 kg per unit.

The graph above indicates growth in China’s yearly exports of aluminium strip, rod and shapes by 2 per cent than the country’s yearly exports of aluminium alloy wheels.
The value of China’s aluminium alloy wheels exports in 2018 expanded 10.4% year on year to stand at $4.7 billion, exceeding $4.5 billion for the first time.
The Chinese yuan experienced a tough 2018 and stood around 6.9 in offshore trading as of the end of December. The ratio of the most-traded SHFE aluminium contract to the LME three-month contract stood at about 7.14 in November-December, up from 7.19 in the same period of 2017. This provided better arbitrage opportunities to exporters.
Besides, fears of tariff hikes amid uncertainties over the US-China trade tensions prompted manufacturers of aluminium products to rush out export shipments and bolstered exports.
