China’s bauxite import volume grows 8% Y-o-Y in June but 9.4% down from a month ago

EDITED BY : DEBANJALI SENGUPTA 2MINS READ

China, with the biggest aluminium market, is constantly diversifying its bauxite import sources and at the same time witnessing a year-on-year growth in volume. According to the latest data by China Customs, the country saw an 8 per cent Y-o-Y growth in bauxite import in June to stand at 7.45 million tonnes, against 6.86 million tonnes in the same period of 2017, but 9.4 per cent down from 7.52 million tonnes in a month ago. The major share of import volume was from Guinea at 44.2 per cent as the country continued to be a major supplier of bauxite to China.

The data shows that Guinea has been emerging as the mainstay for bauxite sourcing as far the China market is concerned. In 2017, Guinea had exported a total volume of 27.62 million tonnes of bauxite to China that recorded a rise by 132.35 per cent from the previous year. It was also estimated that given the macroeconomic scenario remained fairly unchanged, Guinea would continue to grow its bauxite exports in a similar way in 2018.

In the first three months of 2018, China imported a total volume of 20.4 million tonnes of bauxite, 47 per cent year-on-year increase. According to the General Customs data, China’s bauxite import in January had increased by more than 50 per cent from the same period previous year; while in February, the volume rose 43.7 per cent year on year and in March, 44 per cent year-on-year.

Besides Guinea, Australia has also been a major supplier of bauxite to China. In first three months, the country had exported a total volume of 7 million tonnes and in April only, it exported 2.6 million, up 44 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year.

According to SMM, China’s total output of alumina in July recorded a year-on-year rise by 2.4 per cent and stood at 5.91 million tonnes. Production of primary aluminium also grew 0.2 per cent to stand at 3.13 million tonnes, marking the first year-on-year growth in 2018. This indicates that a year-on-year rise in China’s bauxite import could accelerate the domestic production of alumina and aluminium.

Also, the growing volume of alumina export from China also indicates its rising volume of bauxite procurement. In June, China exported 118,000 tonnes of alumina, up 24 per cent from May’s export of 89,999 tonnes.
