Chamber of Mines fears near collapse of bauxite industry
The Ghana Chamber of Mines has warned that Ghana’s bauxite industry may collapse if the country’s transportation system is not fixed immediately.

Ghana’s bauxite industry has recorded a plunge over the years due to poor railway lines and deteriorating road networks that hamper the transportation of the resource.

Mining giants Rio Tinto in 2009 sold off its 80 percent stake in Ghana’s bauxite mine at Awaso citing poor infrastructure as one of the major reasons for its move.

The Chief Executive of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Tony Aubynn, told Citi Business News government must speed up the rehabilitation of railway lines to save the situation from further decline.

“Bauxite production is in serious distress because haulage of the ore to the harbour is a serious challenge. Now the railway system is not working and this is a problem for producers,” he said.

He said the same plight may befall the production of magnesium because the haulage of the goods has become expensive and unsafe.

Citi Business News has learnt trucks loads of bauxite meant for export are currently locked up at production points due to the poor nature of railway lines.
