Centre to clear stand on Vedanta mine
The Environment and Tribal Affairs ministry will clear their stand on the Vedanta mining case in Supreme Court on Monday.

The verdict on the mining project in Odisha is crucial as it will undoubtedly play a key role in deciding the fate of several other projects that need forest lands under the Forest Rights Act (FRA).

If the decision is given against the cancellation of the Vedanta mining case, hundreds of projects that require forest lands as part of their project will be affected, a news paper reported.

The Vedanta mining case earlier was scrapped by the government, which cited that the tribals’ forests cannot be used for any other development project and only for wildlife conservation in an affidavit to Supreme Court. An apex court later directed the government to submit their views on the same.

The court asked the Centre to clarify as on one hand the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) asked the Environment ministry and Tribal Affairs ministry to further reduce the consent approval for the green clearance procedures and on the other, they had to take a stand to defend the cancellation of Vedanta bauxite mining case.

FRA has been aimed to enable the tribals to gain rights over their forest lands.
