Cape York mine deal raises hopes to boost Cairns economy

A LARGE-scale bauxite exploration and drilling program will begin north of Weipa later this year after a mining company finalised access agreements with Cape York traditional land owners.
The agreement between Cape Alumina Limited and the Apudthama Land Trust was announced yesterday, bringing the Bauxite Hills project one step closer to fruition and potentially bolstering Cairns’ status as a fly-in fly-out hub.
While about 1600 people use Cairns as a fly-in fly-out base for mines in Australia and Papua New Guinea already, the new project could increase the number significantly with more than 1000 jobs potentially on offer.
Cape Alumina acting chief executive officer Neville Conway told The Cairns Post the agreement was a significant step in establishing the mine and paving the way for Cairns to become a base for its workers.
‘‘We would aim to use Cairns as a significant source for our workforce... We would be encouraging fly-in fly-out from Cairns to the project site,’’ he said.
