The initiative was initially trialled in 2024 through a pilot programme before being rolled out more widely across Europe during the following year. As a result, several NIVEA MEN deodorant sprays, along with selected 8×4 aerosol products, are now sold in cans produced from fully recycled aluminium.

According to Beiersdorf, adopting this material is expected to lower the emissions associated with its aluminium packaging. Kelvin Oecksler, global packaging development lead in the company’s R&D division, described the development as a significant milestone for the organisation’s environmental strategy.

He stated that for packaging, the change represents more than a technical update, calling it a decisive move towards a genuinely circular system that aligns with the company’s broader sustainability ambitions. Beiersdorf’s objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045 was mentioned by Oecksler, stating that meaningful progress will require solutions that benefit the environment while also creating value for consumers and the business. In this context, he emphasised the importance of the company’s strategic collaboration with Ball.

The two partners said the project contributes to their wider efforts to incorporate climate-conscious design principles and strengthen responsible business practices. Victoria Marletta, vice-president for commercial, personal and home care at Ball Corporation, said the milestone demonstrates the enduring value of aluminium as a material capable of supporting a waste-free future. She added that the project shows environmental responsibility can coexist with commercial performance and aligns with Ball’s global target of cutting absolute emissions by 55 per cent by 2030.

Ball also pointed out that the initiative highlights how fully recycled inputs can be used effectively within large-scale packaging production.
