Bauxite mine generates income for many

The villagers of Nawailevu and nearby villages have embarked on vegetable farming not only for their own use but for commercial purposes as well.
Bua provincial administrator Inoke Tagicakibau said the vegetables would be sold by the villagers to the Chinese workers at the mine and to the local buyers.
"This is a good initiative because it will generate more income for villagers," he said.
"Instead of relying on the mine for income, the villagers have turned to farming as another source of income."
"This is their own self-help project and we are thankful they have come up with some positive ideas.
"We are trying to make use of all the available land in the province for development purposes so that poverty is eradicated in this area."
Mr Tagicakibau said the people of Bua needed to have the right attitude in order to develop the province into a commercial centre.
"We have what it takes to turn this place into a more developed area but it takes a right mind and motive to make it happen. These types of ideas should inspire villagers to work hard and strive for better living standard," he said.
