Aftermath of US aluminium and steel tariffs show up in Pennsylvania, economic distress at its peak

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Pennsylvania, the fifth-most populous state in the United States, is reportedly facing economic distress due to inflation and unemployment. Strained global supply chains, labour shortages, and historic inflation outpacing income have been causing hurdles for the past few years.

Role of aluminium & steel tariffs

To top them off, the tariffs on aluminium and steel imports levied during the reign of US President Donald Trump under the guise of national security have caused bruises to end-use product manufacturers, given that Pennsylvania has robust product sectors heavily dependent on aluminium and steel as inputs. From farming equipment to auto parts, aluminium plays a significant role in their production.

Many believe that federally imposed Section 232 tariffs on aluminium and steel have even affected Pennsylvania's agricultural industry, so much so that the state has lost its ability to combat inflation and lower the price of many goods produced and used in the farming sector.

America is any way suffering from domestic aluminium metal supply due to the closure of the Magnitude 7 Metals smelting plant in Missouri last month. About 30 per cent of the nation's aluminium capacity has been eliminated overnight with the closure of the smelter, resulting in increased semi-fabricated aluminium imports despite higher tariffs.

Effects of tariffs

The complaint is America, even being one of the world's largest consumers of aluminium products, can't buy them at the best price. As a result, end-use product prices have increased for consumers while profit margins have decreased for businesses.

These tariffs have thus left the domestic business with no choice but to look for cheap options like Chinese aluminium forged in coal-burning smelters.

In context to this, Matthew Espenshade, President of Pennsylvania State Grange, said: "Repealing these tariffs is an investment in stopping prices from rising, both on the goods we buy and the goods our businesses sell. These tariffs affect virtually every Pennsylvania business. This self-imposed harm our government is doing to its taxpayers is simply unsustainable."
