Innovation has no limit, especially when it comes to aluminium; introducing new and upgraded technologies has been the heart of all the players. One such transformative system has been brought into focus, which offers aluminium production with a new vision for the final hot rolling stages. ABB, a global technology company specialising in electrification and automation, has introduced the upgraded version of its Millmate Thickness Gauge (MTG) technology. This upgraded technology aids in bringing the precise aluminium thickness measurement at the final stage of the hot rolling processes.
With new system comes new features, as does the new MTG box Gauge. It has shown proven performance in the hot rolling environment, where it measures the thickness of the aluminium strip, which is below 8 millimetres at the tail end of the hot rolling, providing accurate data, which is deemed vital for maintaining the production efficiency as well as the product quality.
Not only this, but this latest upgrade also protects against the various conditions which are usually witnessed in the hot rolling process with an ensured refined IP66 sealing, shielding the interior sensor components from getting in contact with the emulsions, undertaken to manage friction as well as control the rolling temperatures.
The newly designed unit adds an optimised internal flow of air, redirecting the cool air towards the heat-sensitive electronic boards while concurrently eliminating warm air via the unit base. With this feature, the operating temperature during the transmission coil is reduced by nearly 40 degrees Celsius, improving efficiency and durability.

MTG Box Gauge avoids complexity and the safety issues which are highly associated with X-ray systems by using the firm’s pulsed eddy current technology. Besides this, the latest technology enables the precise single-sided measurement without the need for mounting sensors on both sides of the strip.
These features not only streamline the installation and maintenance process but also eliminate the space requirement in the mill, making it viable for accessing the underside of the strip, which is deemed limited.
In the traditional thickness gauges, recalibration of the different aluminium alloys was highly required, but the newly developed MTG Box Gauge helps aid with consistent and accurate results, no matter what the alloy type is. Manufacturers, with the alloy independence, can simplify setup, reduce the downtime and maintain a continuous rolling across the mixed production schedules.

Back in October this year, the firm bagged the “Manufacturer of the Year” award for aiding the aluminium industry in optimising production, reducing waste and achieving the desired decarbonisation goal at the Instrumentation & Electronics Awards.
