Middle East conflict revives Pentagon concerns over US high-purity aluminium supply
A Pentagon-led simulation has brought fresh attention to the US’ dependence on imported high-purity aluminium, a critical raw material used in military aircraft, armoured vehicles and other defence applications. Conducted months before recent disruptions spurred by the Middle East conflict, the exercise had the US aluminium supply chain in focus. It examined how the US aluminium supply chain would respond during a major geopolitical conflict and identified high-purity aluminium as one of the most exposed segments of the country’s defence industrial base. The findings have gained renewed relevance following the Iranian missile attacks on the aluminium facilities of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) in the Middle East or Gulf region on March 28, 2026. Although...

ALFED lobbying delivers expansion of British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme for aluminium sector
The Aluminium Federation (ALFED) has welcomed the UK Government's decision to expand eligibility under the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS), following sustained engagement with Government on behalf of the aluminium sector. The government has confirmed that just four additional Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes will be added following its latest consultation. Significantly, two of these directly support the UK cast metals sector, while the remaining additions recognise manufacturing activities undertaken by businesses across the wider aluminium supply chain. The newly eligible activities are: 2453-Casting of Light Metals 2454-Casting of Other Non-Ferrous Metals 2550-Forging, Pressing, Stamping and Roll-Forming of Metal; Powder Metallurgy 2561-Treatment and...

Level the field: CAIT, downstream aluminium bodies urge centre to rationalise primary aluminium duty to power MSME growth
India's manufacturing ambitions will remain unrealised unless its MSMEs are allowed to compete on a level playing field, said Mr Praveen Khandelwal, Member of Parliament and Secretary General, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), asserting that the downstream aluminium sector holds significant untapped potential for employment generation, export growth and domestic value addition. Mr Khandelwal said that policy must enable MSMEs to access industrial inputs at globally competitive prices, adding that a fair and rationalised duty structure on primary aluminium is essential to strengthening the entire manufacturing ecosystem from raw material to finished product rather than protecting any single segment of the value chain. Echoing this position, India's leading downstream aluminium...

ALFED and Cast Metals Federation urge action on industrial energy competitiveness following parliamentary engagement
The Aluminium Federation (ALFED) and the Cast Metals Federation (CMF) have jointly submitted a Parliamentary briefing to Ministers and MPs following discussions at the All-Party Parliamentary Manufacturing Group (APMG) on 23 June, highlighting growing concerns over the impact of industrial energy costs on UK manufacturing competitiveness, investment and employment. The briefing, developed following engagement with parliamentarians and industry representatives this week, calls for a renewed focus on industrial energy competitiveness as a critical component of the UK's industrial strategy, economic growth ambitions and plans for reindustrialisation. Whilst welcoming the government's introduction of the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS), both organisations have warned that...
