Weekly Alumina Recap: Rio Tinto’s Q2 alumina production increasesd due to strong operational performance at the refineries; Concord Resources acquires stake in New Day Aluminum

The past week saw Rio Tinto announcing its production results for the second quarter. Rio Tinto’s alumina production stood at 2.0 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2021, 1% higher than the corresponding period of 2020, reflecting strong operational performance at the refineries.
Aluminium production came in at 0.8 million tonnes, 4% higher than the same period of 2020. Value-added product sales have improved to 50% in the first half of 2021 (first half 2020: 40%).

Concord Resources Holdings Limited has acquired the majority ownership in New Day’s principal holdings, which include its Noranda Alumina refinery and NICHE Chemical non-metallurgical alumina business in Gramercy, Louisiana, as well as its Noranda Bauxite mine operations in St. Ann, Jamaica owned in partnership with the Government of Jamaica.

Altech Chemicals (ATC) advanced the Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) for its battery materials high-purity alumina (HPA) coating plant in Germany. The plant in designed to coat 10,000 tonnes of anode graphite per year in its initial stage, using Altech’s alumina coating technology.
As updated by Shanghai Metals Market, average spot alumina price in China has increased by RMB 4 per tonne on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 after remaining flat since June 7. The price has come in at RMB 2489 per tonne today, from RMB 2485 per tonne.
