Votorantim Metais’ Alumina Rondon project will start operations by 2017
VM is currently concluding feasibility studies and construction work for the project is expected to begin in May 2014.
“We expect to conclude the process of obtaining permits by May 2014,” Gatti said.
VM will invest over 5 billion Reais ($2.2 billion) on the project, which is located in Brazil’s Pará state, and it is expected to have a bauxite production capacity of 7.7 million tpy, with an alumina capacity of 3 million tpy.
“An expansion plan four years later could double the production. If this happens, there is a possibility of [it] becoming larger than Alunorte,” Gatti added.
Most of the production will be exported, possibly to growing aluminium markets such as Middle East and China.
Alumina Rondon’s ramp-up process was originally planned for the beginning of 2018.
VM has signed a protocol of intentions with Pará state’s secretariat for industry, trade and mining (Seicom) to encourage other mining companies in the region.
VM owns a 10% stake in Brazil’s Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN), which produced 17.1 million tonnes of bauxite in 2012.
Vale, which owns a 40% stake in MRN, has recently announced its intention to sell its share. The probable buyers are current stakeholders such as BHP Billiton (14.8%), Rio Tinto Alcan (12%), Votorantim’s CBA (10%), Alcoa (18.2%) and Norsk Hydro (5%), according to local newspaper Valor Econômico.
Last week, Votorantim Metais announced the halt of nickel matte production at its Fortaleza de Minas unit.
Votorantim Metais’ (VM) Alumina Rondon project, an alumina refinery located close to a bauxite mine in the north of Brazil, is expected to start operations in 2017, Carlos Gatti, the project’s operation manager told Metal Bulletin.
