Vietnam completes bauxite-to-aluminium value chain, targets USD 1.5 billion import reduction

Vietnam has taken a major step towards building a self-sufficient aluminium industry after unveiling its first domestically produced primary aluminium ingots, a milestone that completes the country's bauxite-to-aluminium production chain and is expected to reduce aluminium imports by around USD 1.5 billion annually.

The first aluminium ingots were unveiled at the Dak Nong Aluminium Smelter in Nhan Co Industrial Park, Lam Dong Province, making it Vietnam's first pilot facility to produce primary aluminium from domestically processed alumina.

From bauxite to finished aluminium

The project, operated by Tran Hong Quan Metallurgy Co., Ltd., allows Vietnam to process its own bauxite resources into finished aluminium products instead of exporting alumina for further refining overseas.

The company said the aluminium ingots have a purity of 99.71 per cent and are produced using 500-kiloampere electrolysis technology, creating a platform for higher-value aluminium products for both domestic industries and export markets.

Capacity expansion underway

The smelter has an annual production capacity of 150,000 tonnes following the completion of its first phase after 11 years of construction.

Production capacity is expected to double to 300,000 tonnes by the end of 2026 before increasing further to 450,000 tonnes in early 2027.

The project represents an investment of nearly VND 28 trillion (USD 1.07 billion) and occupies a 128-hectare site.

Boost for downstream manufacturing

Beyond reducing import dependence, the project is expected to strengthen Vietnam's downstream manufacturing industries by supplying domestically produced aluminium to sectors including engineering, automotive manufacturing, electronics, construction, renewable energy and aerospace.

The new aluminium production facility is also expected to generate around 3,500 direct and indirect jobs, while reinforcing the Central Highlands as an emerging hub for Vietnam's aluminium industry.
