Vedanta Aluminium, one of the largest producers of aluminium and value added products in India grabbed the “Best in Future of Digital Infrastructure,” award at the IDC Digital Transformation (DX) Summit India and Future Enterprise Awards 2021. The esteemed IDC Future Enterprise Awards celebrate the tech-enabled resilience of enterprises as they march themselves through the challenges and disruptions involved in the ever-changing digital world. Vedanta Aluminium won the award in the ‘Best in Future of Digital Infrastructure’ category for their Wi-Fi 6 and Digital Smelter project.

Vedanta Aluminium is India’s first and world’s third aluminium smelter to start the digital-twin based Digital Smelter technology at Jharsuguda plant. The Jharsuguda plant is the largest single location aluminium smelter in the world. It works by using digital twin technology with predictive and prescriptive analytics, which enables remote monitoring, helps in reducing raw material consumption, controlling potline operations, improves energy efficiency and also reduces wastage of material by using the remote advisory system.
The digital twin technology functions by using historical information and real time data to generate alerts and insights. These alerts and insights are then utilized by the operation and maintenance teams. The technology also works by using machine learning algorithms to ensure multiple outcomes like pot health-related alerts, virtual-sensor based recommendations, etc.

Vedanta Aluminium has also started the high-efficiency Wi-Fi 6 network, which is similar to the futuristic 5G technology, for effortless, energy efficient, secure, high speed connectivity and lower latency through their power plant network. It also comes loaded with centralized monitoring and also managing system which helps in removing the traditional maintenance effort and cost.
“We strive to make our operations future-ready by integrating best-in-class digital solutions, building in efficiencies to optimize costs and raw material consumption in our quest to become the world's leading producer of the ‘green metal’ aluminium. Vedanta Aluminium has implemented intelligent automation and digitalization at its the plants in a manner that is secure, available, accessible, replicable, and scalable, to produce high-quality aluminium, fueling India’s self-reliance and contributing to its socio-economic prosperity,” saus Mr. Rahul Sharma, the CEO of Vedanta Aluminium Business.
Vedanta Aluminium Business is the division of Vedanta Limited and is the largest manufacturer of aluminium in India. It produces half of India’s total aluminium and in FY21, the amount produced stood at 1.96 million tonnes. It is considered as the leader in value-added aluminium products. With their top-class aluminium smelters, alumina refinery and power plants in India, Vedanta fulfilled their mission of making use of aluminium as the “Metal of the Future,” for a green tomorrow.
