The U.S. accounts for the largest chunk of aluminium export by Canada

EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 2MINS READ

Canada’s primary industry has been an integral part of the North American aluminium industrial value chain since its inception and a substantial part of its annual output is exported to the USA every year. According to the latest report from The Aluminium Association of Canada (AAC), the country produces about 3.2 million tonnes of aluminium in a year.  The country remains a net exporter of aluminium.  The major aluminium producers in Canada include Alcoa Inc., Aluminerie Alouette Inc. and Rio Tinto Alcan.

Canada has been following an almost flat trend for aluminium export in last two years. In the year 2015, export of aluminium stood at about 2.8 million tonnes. The volume is estimated to drop to 2.75 million tonnes in 2016. For the first eleven months of 2017, the aluminium import is estimated to stand at about 2.71 million tonnes.  The revenue realized from import was USD 5.9 billion and USD 5.3 billion for 2015 and 2016 respectively. For 2017, the revenue realization is estimated to be about USD 4.9 billion.

Canada also imports minimal amount of aluminium for domestic consumption. In the year 2015, imports of aluminium stood at about 138454 tonnes. The volume is estimated to drop further to 116718 tonnes in 2016. For the first eleven months of 2017, the aluminium import is estimated to stand at about 96046 tonnes.

The cost from import was US$ 315 million and US$ 231 million respectively for the years 2015 and 2016. For the first ten months of 2017, the cost of import of aluminium by Canada is estimated to be about US$ 181 million.

The US is the most important market for Canadian production. The US imports about 2.1 million tonnes of aluminium from Canada every year. For more than a century, Canadian and American aluminium workers and businesses have worked in collaboration to sustain the North American value chain, benefiting from, and, providing benefits to, both sides of the border. Canadian smelters are powered entirely from hydroelectricity and massive investments in on-going plant modernization and operational efficiency have lowered Canadian smelters’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the lowest in the world.
