Sustainability Recap: ASI certifies Hindalco’s Renukoot downstream facility; Volvo & Audi strive to reduce Co2 emissions from operations

This week has witnessed ASI certifications granted to many companies, alongside automobile giants striving to achieve production chain decarbonisation, and institutions collaborating with metal and mining companies to drive a long-term research on ESG.

According to a report on Tuesday, October 17, Aluminium Stewardship Initiative granted Performance Standard V2 (2017) certification to Hindalco’s Renukoot downstream facility in Uttar Pradesh for remelting and refining activities, casthouses, and semi-fabrication. The facility manufactures aluminium ingots, wire rods, and rolled and extruded products destined for diverse industries, including building and construction, transportation, and industrial applications. Hindalco acquired the certification after completing an independent, third-party audit with CETIZION Verifica. Since the audit took place before May 31, 2023, the company received a Performance Standard V2 certification.

A day earlier, ASI announced the joining of Jiangsu Kuna Industry as a new Production and Transformation member. Situated in Xiangshui County Industrial Economic Zone Yancheng City, the company was registered and created at the Xiangshui County Market Supervision Administration with a registered capital of RMB 175.4386 million.

Gränges Konin SA also acquired certification from Aluminium Stewardship Initiative this week. As per the report, the company received both the Performance Standard V3 (2022) and Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard V2 (2022) certifications for designing and manufacturing rolled aluminium strips and sheets at Gränges Konin SA facility in Konin, Poland. This certification marks the completion of Granges’ goal of achieving certification at all its aluminium rolling and recycling sites.

UK’s largest aluminium can facility in Kettering, Northamptonshire, UK, owned by Ball, has been recognised for its work on sustainability, community engagement and employee-led culture, winning two categories at the NNBN awards on Friday 6th October, taking place at the Kettering Plant Hotel. These awards celebrate the work that the global aluminium packaging manufacturer has done over the last 18 months. The Kettering plant, which started production activities in February 2023, is a cutting-edge facility that created over 170 jobs in the region. The facility expects to produce more than one billion fully recyclable Aluminium cans by 2024.

Svante, a leading player in carbon capture and removal technology, entered into a Commercial Supply Agreement with BASF to scale up its proprietary sorbent material, Calgary Framework 20 (CALF-20). CALF-20 is a metal-organic framework (MOF) sorbent that is designed to capture up to 95% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from industrial sources, including the aluminium industry.

India's leading manufacturer of calcined petroleum coke, Goa Carbon Limited (GCL) and BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus, have formally agreed to collaborate on long-term research and development initiatives that prioritise environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, and operational excellence. Calcined petroleum coke is a vital raw material required in primary aluminium production. It is the primary carbon material used as an anode in electrolytic technology, which helps in transforming alumina to aluminium during the smelting process.
